The library lot is the last remaining piece of real estate for a center of the city Commons. For those who have not followed the politics involved, here is some history.
In November 2018, Ann Arbor citizens voted the amend the City Charter by adding this language: …the City-owned public land bounded by Fifth Avenue, and William, Division and Liberty Streets shall be retained in public ownership, in perpetuity, and developed as an urban central park and civic center commons known as the ‘Center of the City.’

a Lansing-based organization called the Great Lakes Renaissance Fund has sent campaign mailers to Ann Arbor households, attacking certain candidates for the City Council and Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners. The motivations behind the campaign are unclear and the funders are unknown.
